hPSCs, including human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), can be expanded indefinitely in vitro and differentiated into all the cell types of the human body.  Thus, hPSC-derived cells have enormous potential in cell therapies, making artificial tissues and drug discovery

However, many challenges should to be resolved before reaching their potential:
- we don’t have bioprocesses that can manufacture large # of GMP  compatible cells with high purity & quality required for these applications
- these cells survive, integrate and function poorly in vivo after transplantation

The Stem Cells, Biomaterials and Regenerative Medicine Laboratory aims to:
- develop novel technology for the advanced manufacture (cost-effective, scalable, GMP compliant, high purity) of hPSCs, cells derived from hPSCs and synthetic tissues
- develop novel technology to significantly improve the cell survival and performance in vivo
- develop novle and efficient cell therapies for disease, such as parkinson's, huntington's, alzheimer's, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, spinal cord injury, stroke, myocardial infarction and diabetes
- develop novel biomaterials for stem cell therapies
